Box Score

The budding rivalry between the Brazos Valley Bombers and East Texas Pump Jacks continues to add more stories to the same chapter.

For the fifth time in six 2010 contests, the Bombers and Pump Jacks played a one-run game. Wednesday night at historic Driller Park, the Bombers came out on top for the fourth time in the games with a differential of one. Brazos Valley scored a run in the second inning and held off furious East Texas rally for the 1-0 win.

Jordan Nicholson pitched well in the start for the Pump Jacks. Nicholson pitched four innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. He was the hard-luck loser, however, as two hits and a sacrifice fly put home the only run of the game in the Bomber second inning.

East Texas pitchers Nicholson, Chris Larsen and Tyler Mack faced more than three batters in only the second and fifth innings. Each pitcher struck out three Bombers, including Mack striking out the side in the ninth inning.

The Pump Jack offense, which scored 18 combined runs the previous two games, was stifled with runners in scoring position three different times. Blake Ellender was stranded at second base after a single and stolen base in the first inning.

In the seventh, after Bomber starting pitcher Nick Fleece was removed, Alex Fuselier was hit by a pitch and sacrificed to second base. Aaron McCain’s bloop was caught on the run by the second baseman, whose throw to second barely beat Fuselier’s attempt to return.

The best chance for the Pump Jacks came in the eighth inning. Bryan Peters singled to left field ahead of an Abel Gonzales walk. Joey Latulippe laid down a sacrifice bunt, and the Jacks were in business with runners on second and third bases and one out. After a strike out, Lee Orr was intentionally walked to load the bases. Brazos Valley’s relief pitcher struck out Brandon Wood, however, to end the threat.

The Pump Jacks’ overall record stands at 17-13, but in the second half they are still in a tie for first place at 3-2.
